Following her 2009 powerhouse The Truth According To Ruthie Foster, Ms. Foster returns with Let It Burn, a rich mix of blues, folk, and a whole lot of gospel.
The release is a collection of new and collaborative singles with a selection of powerful covers from the likes of the Band, Adele, Los Lobos, the Black Keys, Johnny Cash, and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
A reflective yet subtle release, Foster has surrendered her guitar, focussing solely on her vocal performance.
This certainly rings true on powerful wonders ‘Aim For The Heart’ and cover ‘Long Time Gone’, with each track showing off Foster’s innate ability to blend her love of soul, rock, and the blues effortlessly in her delivery.
Her stripped back cover of The Black Keys’ ‘Everlasting Light’ is revamped into an organ gospel number with a slow build, and Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring Of Fire’ does lack the dark rawness of the original but Foster certainly makes these tracks uniquely her own.
Stand out cut The Titanic’, an a cappella duet with touring partners The Blind Boys Of Alabama, is an astounding classic gospel number which truly shows of Foster’s passion and incredible talent.
Foster is currently on tour and is not to be missed.
