Mexican guitar heroes Rodrigo y Gabriela return to Sydney with their virtuosic mix of speed-metal heroics, Flamencan instrumentals and for the first time, in collaboration with prodigal Latin jazz pianist Alex Wilson. Hailed by critics as ‘one of those acts you have to see to believe’, Rodrigo y Gabriela promise an evening of jaw-dropping musical mastery and mind-boggling genre bending, veering between pin-drop intimacy and rhythmic ecstasy. Theirs is a soundscape that traverses not only the organic musical roots of their Latin heritage but pays joyous homage to their own musical heroes, the likes of Led Zeppelin and Metallica to Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. Trading in the struggles of the Mexican metal scene for the busker’s streets of Dublin ten years ago, Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero’s globetrotting journey has taken them from performing at the White House to collaborating with hard rock pioneers Rage Against the Machine, Testament and Metallica, and recording with soundtrack legend Hans Zimmer on Pirates of the Caribbean. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, the duo most recently travelled to Havana, combining their guitar attack with the wildfire locals C.U.B.A for their fourth album, Area 52.
